52.3% of the generation in January was wind energy, PV, hydro and concentrated solar power. The demand for electrical energy increased by 3.1% in the Balearic Islands and decreased by 13.1% in the Canary Islands compared to January 2020. The demand for electrical energy in Spain increased by 1% in January.

The national electricity demand for January is estimated at 24,074 GWh, 1% higher than that registered in the same month of the previous year. If the effects of the calendar and temperatures are taken into account, the figure is 0.7% higher compared to January 2020.

In the month of January, and according to data estimated to date, generation from renewable energies represented 52.3% of production, 34.9% more than the same period in 2020. Furthermore, in January, the 74.7% of electricity production came from technologies that do not emit CO2 equivalent.

With the information available today, wind power generation for the month of January reached 7,212 GWh, 55.9% higher than that registered in the same period last year, and accounted for 29.5% of production , being the first technology of the national generation mix, ahead of nuclear (21.2%) and hydraulic (16.9%).

The demand for electricity increases by 1.5% in the peninsular electricity system

In the peninsular electricity system, the demand for January is estimated at 22,907 GWh, 1.5% higher than that registered in the same month of the previous year. If the effects of the calendar and temperatures are taken into account, the demand is 1.2% higher than that of January 2020.

During this month and according to data estimated to date, 54.1% of the peninsular generation was of renewable origin and 77.5% came from technologies that do not emit CO2 equivalent. For its part, wind power registered 7,129 GWh, 56.1% higher than in January of last year, and became the first source of generation by contributing 30.5% to the mix.

The demand for electrical energy grows by 3.1% in the Balearic Islands and decreases by 13.1% in the Canary Islands in January

In the Balearic Islands, the demand for electrical energy in January is estimated at 470,639 MWh, 3.1% higher than that registered in the same month of the previous year. If the effects of the calendar and temperatures are taken into account, the figure drops 0.6% compared to January 2020.

The combined cycle, with 81.3% of the energy produced in the Balearic Islands, was the first source of electricity generation in the archipelago in January, a month in which renewable energy and that do not emit CO2 equivalent generated in the Balearic community represents 4, 1% of the total. In addition, during this month the electrical energy from the submarine link between the Peninsula and Mallorca covered 29.4% of the Balearic electricity demand.

For its part, in the Canary archipelago the demand for electricity is estimated at 658,120 MWh, 13.1% lower than that registered in the same month of the previous year. If the effects of the calendar and temperatures are taken into account, the figure drops 13% compared to January 2020.

In the Canary Islands, also the combined cycle, with 44.3% of the total, was the first source of electricity generation in January. Renewables and emission-free technologies accounted for 15.2% of production.
