A new alliance dedicated to commercialising hydrogen technologies and systems to encourage the construction of net-zero carbon pathways in India has been unveiled today (6th April).

The India H2 Alliance has been formed by leading industry majors in the region, with Chart Industries and Reliance Industries acting as steering group co-leads.

The main areas India H2 Alliance will focus on are industrial clusters, specifically steel, refineries, fertiliser, cement, ports and logistics as well as heavy-duty transport with a possible establishment of standards for storage and transport hydrogen in pressurised and liquified form.

As a result, the Alliance will work with one another to build the hydrogen economy and supply chain in India and help develop both blue and green hydrogen production and storage in addition to hydrogen-use clusters and transport powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

These goals will be achieved by working with the government on five different areas, India H2 Alliance said.

The first area will be developing a National Hydrogen Policy and Roadmap by 2030 enabling other industries to understand the set out aims and contribute towards the net-zero aim.

Next will be the creation of a national hydrogen taskforce and mission in a public-private partnership format.

This will be followed by the exhibition of national large demonstration stage projects which will spearhead hydrogen development in the region and showcase to the rest of the world the advances India has made in the hydrogen economy.

The final area will be a national hydrogen fund and the creation of hydrogen-linked capacity covering hydrogen production, storage and distribution, industrial use cases, transport use cases and standards.

Anurag Pandey, Research and Development Team Lead at Reliance Industries, said, “India needs to identify and execute large-scale hydrogen demonstration projects if it wants to be part of the global supply chain for hydrogen.”

“Beyond R&D pilots, India needs ‘hydrogen-valley’ style national initiatives across a region like a high-traffic industrial freight corridor, with multiple use-cases. Such hydrogen-related systems projects are strategic for India’s energy transition plans, linking closely with renewables and battery-technology.”

“These require multiple industry players to come together and form consortia to implement such projects. India H2 Alliance will take the lead on such initiatives.”
