The Mauritanian government and society CWP Global signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a power plantgreen hydrogen with a capacity of 30,000 megawatts (the equivalent of 30 gigawatts), announced the Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy, Abdessalem Ould Mohamed Saleh, during a press conference held on Friday May 28 in the capital Nouakchott.

The future plant called ” SECURE Will be built on an area of ??8,500 square kilometers in a desert area in the north of the country.

Construction is expected to take four to six years. The project has an overall cost of US $ 40 billion, according to official figures from CWP Global.

“The project will change the face of Mauritania economically and open up new perspectives”, welcomed Minister Abdessalem Ould Mohamed Saleh.

“The plant will allow the populations to access water and electricity at a lower cost”, said CWP Global Chairman and CEO, Mark Crandall.

The project leader also intends to export green hydrogen and its derivatives “To world markets”.

Green hydrogen is produced primarily by electrolysis of water from renewable electricity. It is especially planned for a better integration of renewable energies in the electricity networks. CWP Global’s project will operate solar and wind farms.

Mauritania is seeking to multiply energy sources to meet a rapidly growing demand for electricity of around 12% per year, according to the Société Mauritanienne d’Electricité (Somelec). The country also has the ambition to expand the national electricity grid because only 45.9% of the population has access to electricity, according to the World Bank.

For CWP Global, Mauritania is “One of the best locations on the planet for the production of green hydrogen at low cost”.

CWP Global was set up in 2006 by the venture capital group Postscriptum Ventures, established in Luxembourg.

The company is currently developing wind and solar projects in Romania, Poland, Serbia, Bulgaria and Australia. In the latter country, the company is developing a large hybrid complex (wind-solar) of 26 GW as part of the project Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH).
