In Pennsylvania, USA, the former Homer City generating station, once the state’s largest coal-powered facility, is being transformed into the Homer City Energy Campus, a 4.5GW natural gas power plant. Announced in early 2025, this redevelopment by Homer City Redevelopment aims to meet growing energy needs, particularly from AI and high-performance computing industries. The project, located on over 3,200 acres, involves an initial investment exceeding $10 billion, marking it as Pennsylvania’s largest commitment to power infrastructure.

GE Vernova will supply seven 7HA.02 hydrogen-enabled gas turbines for the Homer City Energy Campus.

Construction is set to start in 2025, with energy production expected by 2027. The initiative leverages existing infrastructure, including transmission lines linking the Pennsylvania/New Jersey/Maryland and New York power grids, as well as substations. Kiewit Power Constructors will handle engineering and construction, while GE Vernova will provide seven 7HA.02 hydrogen-enabled gas turbines, with deliveries beginning in 2026. Knighthead Capital Management, a key investor in Homer City for nearly eight years, will lead project financing.

GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik highlighted the technology’s benefits: “We are honoured to provide our US-manufactured, highly efficient and advanced HA gas turbine technology and combined cycle equipment for the Homer City Energy Campus.” He noted that the project supports affordable, reliable energy and boosts local economies by creating thousands of skilled jobs. The plant will use natural gas from the Marcellus shale region, addressing rising domestic energy demands without relying heavily on imports.

The redevelopment promises significant environmental improvements, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% to 65% per megawatt-hour compared to the old coal facility. It will also generate 10,000 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent roles across various fields. Homer City Redevelopment president and CEO William Wexler emphasized the project’s broader impact: “This project will honour Homer City’s place in the proud history of Pennsylvania energy generation, while accelerating the state and local community’s ability to meet the needs of a rapidly shifting energy landscape.”

In March 2025, GE Vernova signed a strategic agreement with Amazon Web Services to tackle global energy demands, further aligning this project with future consumption trends. The Homer City Energy Campus reflects a balanced approach, supporting energy production for local and regional use while fostering economic growth in Indiana County and beyond. With construction on track, the initiative positions Pennsylvania as a key player in sustainable energy solutions.
