Beyond hydrogen production, the company is considering additional outputs such as methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (E-SAF) at the Oulu site. The feasibility of producing these synthetic fuels hinges on access to biogenic carbon dioxide. ABO Energy also intends to supply waste heat from the facility for district heating in the Oulu area, enhancing local energy use.
The initial phase of the plant is expected to begin operations between 2034 and 2036. It will be situated in the Pyyryväinen green transition industrial area, a hub designed to support sustainable industrial growth. While this land reservation marks an early step, a final investment decision will follow at a later date.

Finland benefits from some of Europe’s lowest electricity costs, with the Oulu region standing out as the country’s leading producer of renewable power. This advantage, combined with the region’s existing hydrogen initiatives, makes it a prime location for such projects. The international port of Oulu, availability of biogenic carbon dioxide, and access to the European TEN-T transport network further boost its appeal for hydrogen-related investments.
Gasgrid Finland is working on a hydrogen transport network that will link Oulu’s production to other parts of Finland and European nations, including Germany. Meanwhile, the University of Oulu supports the region’s ambitions as a hub for hydrogen research, offering expertise and a skilled workforce to meet industry demands. Several other companies have also chosen Oulu for hydrogen and derivative projects, reinforcing its growing status in the sector.
This initiative by ABO Energy aligns with the region’s focus on sustainable energy solutions, leveraging local strengths to contribute to broader environmental goals. The phased approach allows for gradual scaling, ensuring the project adapts to future needs and resources.
