Trials validated the processability of the underground ore in March using previously extracted development ore.
The move to underground production offers several benefits compared to traditional open-pit methods. It allows for cleaner ore extraction by reducing contamination from waste, leading to higher lithia recovery and improved ore fragmentation. These improvements enhance overall processing efficiency, supporting the operation’s output quality and throughput.
Tony Ottaviano, Liontown’s Managing Director and CEO, highlighted the achievement, stating: “The successful commencement of underground stoping at our Kathleen Valley Lithium Operation on schedule is a proud milestone for Liontown.” He added: “This achievement was made possible by advanced planning, the dedication of our team and the support from our mining partner, Byrnecut, ensuring the first stope blast at Mt Mann proceeded as planned.”
In March, Liontown conducted trials using previously extracted underground development ore to assess its processability. The results showed a head grade of approximately 1.5% lithium oxide and recoveries exceeding 70%, with potential for further gains through ongoing optimization efforts. These findings confirm the viability of the underground ore for large-scale production.
Liontown is focused on advancing mine development, including extending the decline, opening new working areas, and gradually scaling up underground activities. The company aims to prioritize high-margin ore extraction in the near to mid-term to maximize value while maintaining safety and efficiency. By the fourth quarter of FY26, the mill is expected to process solely underground ore, supplemented by existing stockpiles.
Ottaviano further noted the importance of preparatory work, saying: “As part of normal preparations and planning, we undertook underground ore trials in the March quarter, in advance of first stoping, to understand the optimal plant performance settings. The trials delivered results in line with our study work, which reinforces our confidence in transitioning to full underground operations.”
Liontown kicked off lithium production at Kathleen Valley in July 2024, laying the foundation for its underground transition. The shift to underground mining positions the operation to meet growing demand for lithium, a critical component in battery manufacturing, while optimizing resource recovery and operational efficiency in Western Australia’s mining sector.
