TC Energy Corp. Chief Executive Officer Francois Poirier ruled out selling the Canadian Mainline natural gas pipeline.
The decision comes as Canada focuses on strengthening its energy infrastructure. Discussions about energy security have gained attention due to reliance on a crude oil pipeline passing through the United States to supply eastern refineries. Both major political parties in Canada’s ongoing election have emphasized reducing dependence on this route, highlighting the strategic importance of domestic energy networks like the Mainline.
In the past, TC Energy explored converting the Mainline from natural gas to oil under a project called Energy East. However, the initiative was abandoned due to opposition, particularly in Quebec. Following a corporate restructuring last year, TC Energy separated its oil pipeline operations into a new entity, concentrating its efforts on natural gas transportation and power generation. This shift has solidified the Mainline’s role as a key asset for the company.
Francois Poirier addressed the pipeline’s future during an interview in Toronto on Thursday, stating: “We have a very large group of natural gas shippers with whom we have contractual obligations to deliver natural gas for, in some cases, many more decades. Given that all of our capacity is contracted, legally speaking, we wouldn’t be able to consider a conversion of some of our existing infrastructure to oil service.”
The Mainline’s extensive network supports reliable energy delivery to Canadian communities and industries, underpinned by long-term contracts with natural gas shippers. These commitments ensure the pipeline’s continued operation in its current form, ruling out any plans to repurpose or sell it.
