
The collaboration aims to industrialize the XPM technology, a two-in-one power module tailored for range-extended electric vehicles. Li Auto announced: “This agreement marks the first time Li Auto will open its XPM technology to the broader industry via licensing.” Developed over three years with over 50 patents filed, the XPM integrates five key innovations, enhancing cost-effectiveness and performance for extended-range and dual-motor hybrid systems.
The XPM module leverages CRRC’s advanced 7.5-generation fine-groove IGBT chip technology, validated through CRRC’s multipurpose packaging testing platform across various scenarios. Compared to conventional dual-module designs, the XPM reduces module length by 38%, IGBT chip area by 50%, FRD chip area by 33%, and total chip area by over 45%. Its parasitic inductance is minimized to 10 nH, a reduction of more than 50% compared to traditional designs. Features like an integrated water-cooled plate and built-in current sensors further decrease the size, weight, and cost of dual-motor powertrains.
Li Auto highlighted the module’s innovative design: “The XPM’s superior performance and system-level benefits are supported by a suite of five core patented technologies, including an integrated structure and cooling system, optimized chip size and ratio for IGBT and FRD components, low-inductance high-voltage terminal design, integrated ceramic substrates, and compact, high-precision current sensor integration.”
The XPM module is set for mass production by 2026, supporting platforms from 800V high-voltage architectures to 400V systems, making it versatile for range-extended and hybrid powertrains. In a strategic move, Li Auto will license the XPM technology to the broader industry, with Zhuzhou CRRC Times Semiconductor as the first licensed power semiconductor supplier. CRRC Times will spearhead mass production development, enabling the technology’s use in vehicles beyond Li Auto’s lineup.
This agreement strengthens Li Auto’s position in the electric vehicle market while fostering industry-wide innovation. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to advancing sustainable transportation through efficient, high-performance powertrain solutions.
