The proposed site will provide 180 acres for offshore wind manufacturing, assembly, marshalling, and supply chain services. It will feature a deep-water riverside quay, up to 1km long, offering unrestricted North Sea access suitable for both floating and fixed-bottom offshore wind projects. The strategic location within Teesport ensures efficient connectivity for developers and manufacturers.
The project, still in its early stages, requires amendments to existing deep-water berth development consents. PD Ports estimates the development cost at approximately £200 million. The hub is expected to bolster the UK’s offshore wind ambitions by providing critical port infrastructure. The site has secured planning and marine consents, pending modifications, to extend an existing berth to a 15.5m deep-water mooring capable of accommodating all current and planned global offshore installation vessels.
PD Ports is engaging with the offshore renewables sector, including original equipment manufacturers, developers, government bodies, and industry experts, to refine the project’s direction and explore collaboration and funding opportunities. The new deep-water berth will also enhance Teesport’s capabilities, supporting additional bulk and container operations at the existing Teesport Container Terminal and Tees Bulks Quay, ensuring long-term operational flexibility.
Frans Calje, PD Ports chief executive, stated: “One of Teesside’s great strengths is its ability to reinvent itself in the face of change. As the UK and the wider world turns its attention to large-scale renewable energy sources, here at PD Ports we see the opportunity – and the responsibility – to play our part by offering an offshore wind development site that is perfectly positioned to unlock the capability of our region, not only as a hub for trade and industry, but also to deliver the clean energy revolution. Teesport and the River Tees has everything required to successfully operate what we believe will be one of the largest offshore wind manufacturing and assembly hubs on the east coast of the UK, offering unrivalled access to the North Sea. Although these proposals are at an early stage, we are confident that this development will support the UK Government’s ambitions for future offshore wind power generation. We also firmly believe that a facility such as this will lead to significant job creation – driving growth, employment and skills training opportunities in our coastal communities.”
The Teesport Offshore Gateway is poised to create jobs and foster skills development in local communities, contributing to economic growth while advancing the UK’s transition to clean energy through offshore wind power.
