Komatsu’s future autonomous offerings will feature a combination of long and short-range OS sensors from Ouster’s REV7 series.
The agreement marks a transition from legacy 2D lidar systems to Ouster’s advanced 3D lidar technology, improving perception and functionality in Komatsu’s autonomous solutions. This upgrade is designed to boost productivity, lower operational costs, and support a zero-harm environment for Komatsu’s global customers.
Komatsu’s autonomous systems will integrate Ouster’s REV7 series sensors, combining long- and short-range capabilities to enhance detection, navigation, and collision avoidance in challenging mining environments. The collaboration also provides Komatsu with early access to Ouster’s future products for testing and development, enabling the creation of equipment with advanced features that deliver greater value to customers.
Matt Reiland, Komatsu Automation Innovation technical director, stated: “Ouster’s products developed through this partnership can withstand the shock, vibration and temperature constraints while delivering the enhanced range and spatial awareness necessary to operate in harsh mining environments.” The robust design of Ouster’s sensors ensures reliability under the demanding conditions of mining operations.
In February 2025, Komatsu partnered with Japan-based Bridgestone to launch a proof-of-concept initiative focused on developing new service solutions for mining customers, further demonstrating its commitment to innovation in the sector. The agreement with Ouster aligns with Komatsu’s broader strategy to advance automation and safety in mining, leveraging cutting-edge technology to meet industry needs.
By incorporating Ouster’s state-of-the-art lidar technology, Komatsu aims to empower its customers with equipment that operates more efficiently and safely. The partnership reflects a shared focus on delivering sustainable, high-performance solutions that address the evolving demands of the mining industry. Ouster’s 3D lidar sensors are expected to play a critical role in enhancing the precision and reliability of Komatsu’s autonomous mining equipment.
This collaboration positions Komatsu to lead in mining automation, offering customers advanced tools to optimize operations while prioritizing environmental and safety standards. The integration of Ouster’s technology underscores the potential for innovation to transform mining practices globally.
