The Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) and the Taichung City Government have launched an exploratory drilling project to assess geothermal resources at the Guguan site in Taichung, Taiwan. The initiative, with a potential capacity of 15 MW, could power approximately 12,000 households and, if successful, would establish Taichung’s first geothermal power plant.

The Economic Development Bureau of Taichung outlined plans to drill three geothermal exploration wells, named Guguan-1, Guguan-2, and Guguan-3. Each well will reach a maximum depth of 2,000 meters, targeting identified faults and fissure zones. Data collected from these wells will be critical in determining the feasibility of developing a geothermal power facility at the site.

This exploration effort is part of a broader initiative by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs to evaluate the potential of ten pre-identified geothermal sites across the country. The Ministry recently hosted the third Taiwan International Geothermal Conference, where it reiterated its commitment to advancing the geothermal energy sector. The Guguan project aligns with these efforts to expand renewable energy sources and enhance energy sustainability.
