Nokia will implement its Habrok Massive MIMO radios and Levante ultra-performance baseband solutions from the AirScale portfolio. The Habrok 32 radios, powered by Nokia’s ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, provide a 33% increase in output power, enabling Optus to expand coverage and capacity while reducing energy use. These compact, lightweight radios are designed for easy installation, making them suitable for both new deployments and site upgrades.
The Habrok radios feature an ‘Extreme Deep Sleep’ mode, which deactivates unused resources to lower energy consumption without compromising network performance. Additionally, the Levante baseband capacity card, equipped for AI applications, halves energy use compared to previous models while supporting high performance and scalability. Nokia’s Ponente baseband control card will further accommodate growing traffic demands with improved energy efficiency.
Kent Wu, Vice President of Access Network Strategy, Planning and Quality at Optus, stated: “Our deployment with Nokia’s new Habrok massive MIMO radio and new Levante and Ponente baseband modules marks an important step in meeting the growing demand from our customers for enhanced connectivity in Australia’s regional areas. We know connectivity is vital for our customers so they can stream their favourite content, download TV shows and movies, or upload pictures and videos onto their favourite social media platforms.”
Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: “The introduction of Nokia’s latest solutions in this deal strengthens our long-term partnership with Optus. Our AirScale Massive MIMO radios and ultra-performance baseband solutions enable fast network modernization, providing a boost in 5G coverage and speeds for enhanced user experience while maximizing spectral efficiency.”
The upgrades will enhance Optus’s ability to meet rising connectivity demands, particularly in regional areas, by optimizing shared spectrum assets and improving data rates. The energy-saving features align with sustainability goals, reducing operational costs while maintaining high network reliability. This collaboration reinforces Optus’s commitment to delivering fast, efficient, and eco-friendly 5G services across Australia, supporting both consumer and business needs.
