The Kilvinane Wind Farm.
The Kilvinane Wind Farm, currently operating with three turbines, will see its capacity increased to produce approximately 8,500 megawatt-hours of energy annually. This upgrade bolsters Ireland’s position as the world’s second-largest producer of wind energy relative to its electricity generation share, contributing clean power to homes and businesses.
An Bord Pleanála granted approval based on the upgrade’s design, which preserves the wind farm’s existing character and integrates seamlessly with surrounding structures. The decision provides clear guidance for wind farm operators and planning authorities on maintenance and upgrade planning, ensuring efficient and sustainable operations.
Mark Apsey, Ameresco’s senior vice-president for the UK and Ireland, stated: “The upgrade will ensure the efficient operation of the wind farm and contribute to Ireland’s ambitious renewable energy targets, providing cleaner energy to thousands of homes and businesses. This decision provides clarity and certainty for wind farm operators in Ireland, and we are excited to move forward with our turbine upgrades.”
In a related development, Ameresco SUNEL Energy, a joint venture with SUNEL Group, recently secured €303.4 million contracts to build three solar parks in south-western Romania, with a combined capacity of 466 MWp. Developed by OMV Petrom and CE Oltenia, these projects support Romania’s goals to enhance energy security and transition from coal power by 2032.
The Kilvinane Wind Farm upgrade underscores Ameresco’s commitment to advancing renewable energy, aligning with Ireland’s sustainability objectives and fostering reliable, eco-friendly energy solutions for the region.
