The AfDB’s funding comprises a loan of up to €18.5 million and a concessional loan of up to €8 million, sourced from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, managed by the bank. The €61 million project also receives co-financing from Proparco, a French development finance agency, demonstrating effective collaboration between public and private sectors.
Togo aims to achieve 200 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, the country had 67 MW of installed solar capacity by the end of 2024. The Sokodé project marks a significant step toward meeting this goal, boosting clean energy access and supporting sustainable development.
In addition, construction began in April 2025 on a separate 25 MW solar project in northern Togo, further expanding the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. These initiatives reflect Togo’s commitment to increasing its clean energy capacity and reducing reliance on non-renewable sources.
The Sokodé solar plant will contribute to Togo’s energy security and economic growth by providing reliable, sustainable electricity. The project aligns with broader efforts to enhance renewable energy adoption across Africa, with the AfDB playing a key role in financing and facilitating such developments.
