Switzerland and the United Kingdom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the development of a direct rail link between the two nations. The agreement, formalized by their respective transport departments, establishes a working group to engage public and private stakeholders in discussions.

The MoU outlines key considerations, including border control processes, utilization of the Channel Tunnel, and collaboration with commercial operators. While no specific timeline for the railway’s completion has been established, the initiative aims to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable travel options.

Heidi Alexander, UK Transport Secretary, stated: “A direct rail link had the potential to boost tourism, grow our economy and bring people closer together – all while offering a greener option for passengers.” The rail connection is expected to support economic growth by facilitating tourism and business travel, while also aligning with environmental goals through reduced reliance on air travel.

Swiss Federal Councillor Albert Rösti added: “The MoU would help examine concrete next steps.” This collaboration reflects a commitment to advancing infrastructure that strengthens ties between the two countries and supports efficient cross-border movement.

The proposed rail link is anticipated to streamline travel, offering a convenient alternative for passengers and contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
