Speaking at the event, Zeleke Temesgen, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission, highlighted the government's initiatives to support electric mobility. “The Ethiopian government has already banned the production, import, and assembly of gas-powered cars, so Ethiopia would be an ideal market for reputable companies like GAC Group,” he said. Temesgen also encouraged GAC Group to establish a manufacturing facility in Ethiopia to leverage favorable investment policies and growing market demand.
Bareo Hassen, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Transport and Logistics, reiterated the government’s aim to achieve green mobility in a short period. He emphasized that transitioning to EVs is essential for energy conservation and long-term economic development.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, more than 100,000 EVs are currently in use in Ethiopia, with a target of reaching 500,000 over the next decade. This transition involves replacing most fossil fuel-powered vehicles and expanding infrastructure such as public charging stations. The government is also providing incentives, including access to free or leased land, to support private investment in EV-related services.
Wei Haigang, President of GAC International, shared the company’s long-term vision for Ethiopia. He stated that through collaboration with local partner Huajian Group, GAC will focus on EV sales, the development of charging infrastructure, and plans for local assembly. “We see great potential in Ethiopia’s EV market and will actively participate in its development,” said Wei.
GAC’s entry into Ethiopia aligns with the country’s strategy to reduce reliance on traditional fuel sources and promote sustainable transportation. The company’s introduction of advanced EV models, along with plans for infrastructure and local production, positions it to contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s evolving automotive landscape.
The launch also reflects a growing trend of international automotive firms investing in Africa’s emerging EV markets. With supportive government policies and rising demand, Ethiopia is becoming an attractive destination for electric vehicle development and investment.
By initiating operations in Ethiopia, GAC Group aims to support the local transition to clean mobility while expanding its footprint in the global EV sector. The company’s strategic approach combines technology, local partnership, and long-term investment to meet the needs of a rapidly growing market.
