The Girgarre solar PV plant (pictured) is located 50km west of the city of Shepparton.
The Girgarre solar plant spans 250 hectares and features around 169,000 solar modules, generating approximately 200GWh of renewable energy annually. Construction began in 2023, and the facility is expected to be fully operational in early 2025. In December 2023, SmartestEnergy Australia signed a power purchase agreement to distribute the plant’s renewable energy to businesses and homes across Victoria.
Werther Esposito, CEO of Potentia Energy, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project, stating: “Very importantly, we gather to celebrate the community of our solar farm. A community that has embraced and shaped this project from its inception. Through the efforts of everyone here today, and many more, renewable energy generated from Girgarre Solar Farm is now powering businesses and homes across Victoria, supporting Australia’s transition to a sustainable energy future.” He noted that projects like Girgarre require years of planning and hundreds of workers.
Earlier in 2025, Potentia Energy expanded its renewable energy portfolio by acquiring a 1.2GW collection of assets from infrastructure investor CVC DIF and superannuation fund Cbus Super. This portfolio includes 700MW of solar photovoltaic and wind projects across multiple Australian states and the Australian Capital Territory, as well as 430MW of advanced-stage developments. These include battery energy storage systems in South Australia and Queensland, and a wind project in Western Australia that recently reached financial close.
Esposito commented on the acquisition, saying: “I believe the acquisition will significantly expand the company’s capabilities within the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and National Electricity Market (NEM).” The addition strengthens Potentia Energy’s role in advancing Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure, supporting the nation’s shift toward a sustainable energy future.
The Girgarre solar plant contributes to Victoria’s renewable energy goals, providing clean power and fostering economic growth through local employment and community engagement. Potentia Energy’s ongoing investments in solar, wind, and storage projects position it as a key player in Australia’s clean energy transition.
