Representatives from Toyota Boshoku Illinois and project partners Onyx Renewables, Sol Systems, and Nelnet Renewable Energy celebrate the launch of Toyota Boshoku Illinois' lsolar energy system.
The initiative was developed through a collaboration with Onyx Renewables, Sol Systems, and Nelnet Renewable Energy. Sol Systems originated and developed the project, which was later acquired by Onyx Renewables. Onyx now provides energy to TBA under a power purchase agreement (PPA). Nelnet Renewable Energy served as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, ensuring the project’s completion.
Hiroki Tsunoda, President of Toyota Boshoku America, stated: “This solar project represents a significant step in our commitment to sustainable manufacturing. By partnering with leading renewable energy companies, we are reducing our environmental footprint while ensuring long-term energy reliability for our Illinois operations.” The project aligns with TBA’s efforts to integrate clean energy solutions into its production processes.
Located on land adjacent to the Lawrenceville facility, the solar array also features a pollinator-friendly habitat, enhancing local ecosystems. The project received federal support as an “energy community” due to the region’s unemployment and historical reliance on fossil fuel employment. This designation underscores the initiative’s role in fostering economic and environmental benefits for the local area, without impacting energy consumption or trade dynamics.
The solar installation enables TBA to meet the majority of its Illinois plant’s energy needs with renewable power, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Yuri Horwitz, CEO of Sol Systems, commented: “We are proud to have collaborated with Toyota Boshoku America to bring this impactful project to life. It demonstrates how renewable energy can drive both economic stability and environmental progress in manufacturing.” The PPA with Onyx Renewables ensures a consistent and cost-effective energy supply for TBA’s operations.
By integrating solar power and sustainable land-use practices, the project supports Lawrenceville’s transition to cleaner energy while contributing to Toyota Boshoku’s broader environmental goals. The collaboration highlights the potential for renewable energy to enhance industrial operations and community well-being in the U.S. Midwest.
