ORLEN plans to achieve a total electrolysis-based hydrogen capacity of 0.9GW by 2035.
The funding, facilitated by Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego under the NRP’s Investments in Hydrogen Technologies, Storage, and Transport measure, will support the development of hydrogen production infrastructure. The Hydrogen Eagle project emphasizes diverse production methods, utilizing electrolysis powered by renewable energy and innovative waste-to-hydrogen technology that processes municipal waste. This initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s hydrogen infrastructure while reducing CO? emissions.
The Green H2 project, led by LOTOS Green H2, a specialized entity within ORLEN Group, focuses on producing renewable hydrogen for refinery operations at the Gdańsk fuel production facility in Poland. The project includes a 100MW electrolyser paired with an energy storage system to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Ireneusz F?fara, ORLEN’s management board president and CEO, stated: “The near 2 billion zlotys secured for the Hydrogen Eagle and Green H2 projects will accelerate progress in the hydrogen segment. Funding from the National Recovery Plan will enable us to expand and scale up hydrogen production infrastructure more efficiently, reinforcing both the domestic and European hydrogen supply networks. It also supports the advancement of this future-oriented technology, which represents one of the key pathways to decarbonisation.”
ORLEN aims to achieve a total electrolysis-based hydrogen production capacity of 0.9GW by 2035, with 0.7GW developed in Poland. The company plans to meet additional demand through imports, contingent on the availability of import infrastructure. To support these efforts, ORLEN VC, the company’s corporate venture capital fund, recently invested in Hystar, a producer of PEM electrolysers, to advance zero-emission hydrogen production technologies.
In a separate development, ORLEN secured a 1.7 billion zloty ($442 million) loan in March 2025 from the European Investment Bank to expand Poland’s electricity distribution network, further supporting the company’s renewable energy objectives.
These initiatives reflect ORLEN’s commitment to scaling up hydrogen production and integrating sustainable technologies, contributing to both Poland’s and Europe’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy security.
