The agreement aims to utilise onshore wind energy for powering passenger and freight rail services in Spain.
The 10-year contract provides 3,700 GWh annually, equivalent to a 190MW wind power output. This partnership strengthens the role of onshore wind energy in Spain’s energy mix while aiming to reduce CO? emissions by over two million tonnes each year.
Renfe CFO Marta Torralvo stated: “This agreement represents a further step in Renfe’s energy management roadmap. Through this contract, renewable energy production projects are promoted, while stabilising Renfe’s energy prices, which we consider very positive for the company’s management. The high volatility of energy prices has been causing significant disruptions and uncertainties in the evolution of results, and this way, these costs can now be predicted.”
Iberdrola España’s director of clients, David Martínez, commented: “With this agreement with Renfe, we are helping to highlight emission-free electrification in the transport sector, which is responsible for more than a third of the energy consumption in our country. Collaborations like this are essential to support the development of a renewable electricity mix.”
Iberdrola has established itself as a leader in the global PPA market, securing agreements across Europe, North America, Latin America, and Oceania. In 2024, the company maintained its position as Europe’s top PPA player, with a 38% year-on-year increase, contracting 1,251MW. The VPPA with Renfe enables long-term access to renewable energy at stable prices, supporting sustainable transport and energy goals.
The agreement aligns with broader efforts to advance clean energy solutions. For instance, Avangrid, an Iberdrola Group subsidiary, recently launched commercial operations at its 202MWdc Powell Creek solar facility in Putnam County, Ohio, further expanding the group’s renewable energy portfolio.
This collaboration between Iberdrola España and Renfe underscores a commitment to sustainable energy practices, enhancing Spain’s renewable energy infrastructure and supporting environmentally friendly rail operations.
