A former coal mine was repurposed for the solar PV park’s development.
The Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar PV park is expected to generate 1.8% of Greece’s annual electricity production once fully operational. The project, developed on a repurposed former coal mine, is owned by PPC Renewables (PPCR), a subsidiary of the utility group PPC, and constructed by Terna.
This solar park supports Greece’s commitment to increasing renewable energy production and aligns with Europe’s goals for energy independence and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The project is also anticipated to drive economic growth in the Western Macedonia region through job creation and infrastructure development.
Greece’s revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), updated in 2024, targets 82% of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, a significant increase from the previous goal of 66%. The Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar park is a key example of the country’s efforts to meet this ambitious target.
In December 2024, Nextracker supplied U.S.-manufactured solar trackers for projects under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), demonstrating its role in advancing global renewable energy initiatives. The deployment of advanced solar tracking technology at the Oricheio park enhances energy efficiency and contributes to Greece’s sustainable energy future.
