The electricity will come from CFS’s inaugural ARC power plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia.
The ARC plant is described by CFS as the world’s first grid-scale fusion energy facility. Once operational, it is designed to generate 400 megawatts of net electricity, comparable to output from traditional utility-scale natural gas plants.
As part of the agreement, Google also has an option to purchase energy from future ARC plants. While financial terms were not disclosed, the agreement marks a significant expansion of Google’s involvement with CFS, following its initial investment in 2021.

We aim to demonstrate fusion’s ability to provide reliable, abundant, clean energy at the scale needed to unlock economic growth and improve modern living – and enable what will be the largest market transition in history.”
Fusion energy is considered a promising long-term solution due to its ability to generate power without relying on limited natural resources. It replicates the process that powers the sun, where light atomic nuclei—such as hydrogen—fuse together under extreme conditions, releasing energy. Fusion’s potential to deliver consistent, carbon-free electricity makes it suitable for supporting energy demands across transportation, residential and commercial sectors, and advanced technologies including artificial intelligence.
CFS’s ongoing project, SPARC, aims to achieve net energy production from fusion, serving as a foundational step toward the broader deployment of commercial fusion plants. Since its founding in 2018, the Devens, Massachusetts-based company has raised over $2 billion in capital. CFS continues to work with policymakers, energy suppliers, and industry stakeholders to scale fusion energy for global use.
This agreement between Google and CFS represents a milestone in advancing clean energy solutions and highlights growing commercial interest in fusion technology as a viable component of future energy systems.
