Completed Gulf of Suez Wind Farm II.
Construction of the wind farm began in March 2023 and was completed in June 2025. It is situated near the 262.5MW Gulf of Suez Wind Farm I, which has been operational since October 2019. The new facility features 84 wind turbines, each with a 6MW capacity, and 20 of the largest onshore wind turbines, each generating 7.5MW.
The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company will purchase the electricity produced under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The project aligns with Egypt’s goal to increase renewable energy to 42% of its total power generation by 2030. By the end of 2024, Egypt’s total electricity capacity exceeded 59GW, with renewable sources contributing 11%.
The Gulf of Suez Wind Farm II was financed through a funding package led by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, in collaboration with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, the Norinchukin Bank, Société Générale, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Insurance for the project was provided by Nippon Export and Investment Insurance.
Egypt has made significant investments in its energy infrastructure, including $1.5 billion allocated to the distribution grid between 2017 and 2020. The country has also developed energy interconnectors to support its ambition to become a regional energy hub.
The operation of Gulf of Suez Wind Farm II marks a key step in advancing Egypt’s renewable energy objectives, enhancing the nation’s capacity to provide sustainable power while supporting economic and environmental goals.
