Ecopetrol plans to begin the Windpeshi wind project’s construction by the end of 2025.
Located between Uribia and Maicao municipalities, the Windpeshi project is designed to produce 205 megawatts of wind energy. It will contribute to Ecopetrol Group’s self-consumption needs, generating approximately 1,006 gigawatt hours annually, which accounts for 8% to 9% of the company’s total energy requirements. Construction is scheduled to begin by late 2025, with operations expected to start before 2028.
The project is anticipated to lower energy costs and support Colombia’s decarbonization goals. It is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.8 million tonnes over its lifespan. Ecopetrol plans to invest $350 million between 2025 and 2027 to develop the project, marking its first fully owned renewable energy venture. La Guajira, known for its significant wind and solar potential, provides an ideal setting for this initiative.
Following the acquisition, Ecopetrol will integrate Compañía Wind Autogeneración, previously managed by Enel Colombia, into its corporate structure. In May 2023, Enel Colombia halted construction of the Windpeshi project due to local community concerns, but Ecopetrol’s acquisition signals renewed progress. The company aims to address past challenges while advancing its renewable energy objectives.
Ecopetrol’s leadership emphasized the project’s importance: “This acquisition is a milestone in our journey to build a sustainable energy future for Colombia,” said a company spokesperson. The Windpeshi project underscores Ecopetrol’s focus on non-conventional renewable energy and its role in fostering economic and environmental benefits in the region.
