Sizewell C is forecast to provide electricity to up to six million homes.
The concrete will be supplied from Eastern Concrete’s batching plant in Leiston, established in 2023 at Eastlands Industrial Estate, with additional supplies later sourced from a new plant at the Sizewell C construction site. These materials will support non-nuclear infrastructure, including site roads, park-and-ride facilities, and temporary buildings essential for the project’s execution. Eastern Concrete previously supplied materials for Sizewell B’s dry fuel store in 2014, building on its experience with regional nuclear projects.
Sizewell C, a 3.2GW nuclear power station, is expected to power up to six million homes for at least 60 years while reducing carbon emissions by nine million tonnes annually. The project, part of a £330 million investment awarded to 77 suppliers in eastern England, has met its early milestones on time and within budget. Following the UK government’s recent confirmation and a £14.2 billion investment, a final investment decision involving private investors is expected soon.
Tom Baker, Managing Director of Eastern Concrete, stated: “This is the biggest contract I’ve ever secured and the highlight of my career. I always wanted to be involved with the construction of Sizewell C, and I’m thrilled we’re able to expand our local workforce. By paying local salaries, we’re helping drive a circular economy that benefits other businesses in the area. This is fantastic news for East Suffolk. Sizewell have come good on their commitment. They said they would support local businesses and that’s exactly what they’ve done.”
Damian Leydon, Sizewell C Site Delivery Director, added: “It’s fantastic to see this contract creating jobs locally while drawing on the expertise of a regional supplier. We’ve pledged to invest £4.4bn in the East of England, and this partnership clearly demonstrates that commitment.”
The project also involves major contractors Balfour Beatty, Bouygues Travaux Publics, and Laing O’Rourke, who have agreed to handle the main civil works for Sizewell C. This collaboration underscores the project’s commitment to regional economic growth and sustainable energy development, enhancing local employment and infrastructure while advancing low-carbon energy goals.
