Independent energy assurance provider DNV has been contracted to certify the design of Norway’s first bottom-fixed offshore wind farm, Sørlige Nordsjø II (SNII), developed by Ventyr. The certification will cover the project’s wind turbines and offshore substation, ensuring high standards for this significant renewable energy initiative.

The SNII will feature 60 to 100 turbines with a total capacity of up to 1.5GW.

Located 200 kilometers off Norway’s southwest coast, near Denmark’s maritime border, SNII covers 520 square kilometers. The project, managed by Ventyr—a consortium of JERA Nex (through Parkwind) and Ingka Investments (part of Ingka Group, IKEA’s largest retailer)—will include 60 to 100 turbines, delivering a total capacity of 1.5 gigawatts. A 200-kilometer high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link will connect the wind farm to Kvinesdal’s substation in southern Norway.

DNV’s North Sea Outlook Report projects the region could support over 150 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by mid-century, establishing it as a major hub for global renewable energy production. SNII represents a key milestone in realizing this potential, advancing Norway’s renewable energy goals.

DNV’s certification ensures the wind turbines and substation designs meet rigorous safety and sustainability criteria. Worley Rosenberg was named the preferred contractor for SNII’s design and engineering work earlier this year.
