The SNII will feature 60 to 100 turbines with a total capacity of up to 1.5GW.
Located 200 kilometers off Norway’s southwest coast, near Denmark’s maritime border, SNII covers 520 square kilometers. The project, managed by Ventyr—a consortium of JERA Nex (through Parkwind) and Ingka Investments (part of Ingka Group, IKEA’s largest retailer)—will include 60 to 100 turbines, delivering a total capacity of 1.5 gigawatts. A 200-kilometer high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link will connect the wind farm to Kvinesdal’s substation in southern Norway.
DNV’s North Sea Outlook Report projects the region could support over 150 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by mid-century, establishing it as a major hub for global renewable energy production. SNII represents a key milestone in realizing this potential, advancing Norway’s renewable energy goals.
Ventyr project director Wim Verrept highlighted the project’s significance: “Sørlige Nordsjø II marks a historic step forward for Norway’s offshore wind ambitions, and we are proud to partner with DNV to ensure the project meets the highest standards from the outset. Robust certification is essential to delivering safe and sustainable offshore wind infrastructure, and DNV’s experience and technical rigour make them a natural partner for this landmark development.”
DNV’s certification ensures the wind turbines and substation designs meet rigorous safety and sustainability criteria. Kim Sandgaard-Mørk, DNV’s renewables certification executive vice-president, stated: “We are very pleased to deliver certification services for this project, which represents a key milestone in Norway’s offshore renewables ambition. DNV has been closely following the development of offshore wind in Norway and is actively supporting Norwegian authorities and regulators with technical insight and guidance based on decades of experience in certifying offshore wind projects globally.”
Worley Rosenberg was named the preferred contractor for SNII’s design and engineering work earlier this year. The project reflects Norway’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy sector, leveraging global expertise to ensure reliability and environmental responsibility. By advancing SNII, Norway strengthens its role in the international offshore wind industry, contributing to sustainable energy production.
