RIGS is a new 400MW peaking facility being developed by NB Power in collaboration with the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council.
The RIGS facility, located on Route 940 on NB Power-owned land, will utilize dual-fuel combustion turbines and grid-stabilizing synchronous condensers to ensure reliable power supply. The site’s proximity to existing transmission lines and fuel sources minimizes environmental impact, supporting sustainable development. The project responds to anticipated energy shortfalls projected for 2028, earlier than the previously expected 2030s timeline, as New Brunswick transitions to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which can be inconsistent during low-wind or low-sunlight periods.
Jeff Canon, PROENERGY’s president and CEO, stated: “Our team has a deep understanding of Eastern Canada. PROENERGY appreciates the trust placed in us by NB Power and the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council to provide the reliable fast-start power they need.” This partnership leverages PROENERGY’s expertise to deliver a facility capable of meeting peak electricity demands efficiently.
Under a 25-year power purchase agreement, PROENERGY will operate the plant, with NB Power as the primary customer. The RIGS project strengthens grid reliability, ensuring stable electricity supply for residents and businesses. It aligns with NB Power’s commitment to sustainable and secure energy solutions amid increasing regional energy needs.
Lori Clark, NB Power’s president, CEO, and chief nuclear officer, said: “At NB Power, our commitment is to provide secure and sustainable energy for New Brunswickers. Launching this generation expansion project addresses the pressing need to enhance our grid’s reliability and security to meet the unprecedented growth in energy demand. Partnering to secure additional electricity and capacity through this project ensures we can confidently navigate the energy transition, providing New Brunswickers with the reliable electricity they need, when they need it most.”
The RIGS project represents a proactive step to bolster energy security in New Brunswick, supporting the region’s shift toward sustainable energy while addressing immediate and future electricity demands. By integrating advanced technology and strategic partnerships, NB Power aims to maintain a robust and reliable power grid for the province’s growing population.
