The facility includes a vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) line, enabling the production of ultra-long-distance high-voltage cables with improved insulation and reliability. This expansion positions LS Cable & System to meet growing global demand for advanced cable solutions. The company stated: “The global HVDC cable market is expected to grow to approximately KRW 40 trillion by 2030.”
The new plant supports LS Cable & System’s plans to collaborate with LS Marine Solution on the West Coast HVDC Energy Highway, a major grid connection project in South Korea. Scheduled for completion by 2040, this initiative aims to transmit 20 gigawatts of offshore wind energy to key industrial regions, with construction expected to begin by 2030 if approved.
In a related development, LS Marine Solution is investing KRW 345.8 billion (approximately €221 million) in a cable-laying vessel (CLV) with a 13,000-ton capacity, to be constructed at Türkiye’s Tersan Shipyard. The company noted that this vessel, designed for long-distance cable laying, is uniquely suited among domestic vessels for the West Coast HVDC Energy Highway project, enhancing its technical capabilities for large-scale energy initiatives.
Additionally, LS Cable & System has been selected as one of ten suppliers for the UK National Grid’s £59 billion HVDC supply chain framework, enabling the company to contribute to critical energy projects across the United Kingdom. This recognition underscores its growing role in global energy infrastructure.
The completion of the Donghae-si facility strengthens LS Cable & System’s position in the HVDC cable market, supporting South Korea’s renewable energy goals and international energy projects. The expansion reflects the company’s commitment to advancing cable technology and meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving energy sector.
