The estimated capex for the project ranges between C$2.1bn ($1.54bn) and C$2.4bn until 2028.
The initiative involves expanding site infrastructure, upgrading the mining fleet, enhancing the grinding circuit, increasing tailings storage capacity, and improving power and water systems. A mine pushback will also facilitate additional waste stripping to access high-quality ore in the Valley Pit. These enhancements are expected to sustain an average copper production of 132,000 tonnes per year throughout the mine’s extended lifespan, with a 20,000-tonne increase in copper and a 1,100-tonne increase in molybdenum production forecasted for 2028.
The capital investment for the project is estimated at C$2.1 billion to C$2.4 billion, with funding allocated from the second half of 2025 through 2028. Construction is set to begin in August 2025, preserving approximately 1,500 direct jobs and creating around 2,900 positions during the construction phase.
Jonathan Price, CEO of Teck Resources, stated: “This quarter marked a significant milestone in the growth of Teck’s copper production into the future, with regulatory approval and Board sanction for construction of the Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension project.” The project supports Teck’s focus on sustainable resource development and strengthens its position in the global copper market.
In September 2024, Teck announced a new corporate structure, organizing operations into two regional divisions—North America, encompassing the Highland Valley mine, and Latin America. This restructuring aligns with the company’s strategy to become a leading producer of energy transition metals, emphasizing copper and other critical resources.
The Highland Valley Copper mine extension underscores Teck’s commitment to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility while supporting economic growth in British Columbia through job creation and long-term resource development. The project positions the region as a key contributor to the global supply of copper, meeting growing demand in various industries.
