The grant highlights Prysmian’s role in advancing electricity transmission to meet growing demand and facilitating the energy transition.
Under the agreement, Prysmian will supply high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables and provide maintenance services for high-voltage cable systems. Terna has committed to purchasing at least 50km of high-voltage cable annually, with the flexibility to increase orders based on operational requirements. The cables will be manufactured at Prysmian’s advanced facility in Pignataro Maggiore, Campania, which recently received over €20 million in investments to expand production capacity for high-voltage cables.
Marcello Del Brenna, Prysmian Europe CEO, stated: “We will work closely with Terna to support enhancements in reliability and resilience of the Italian power grid and together make a significant impact to progress the energy transition, while supporting the overall Italian economy, as we manufacture these cables at our Pignataro Maggiore factory in Caserta.” This partnership underscores Prysmian’s role in advancing electricity transmission to meet rising demand and support sustainable energy goals.
The collaboration aligns with Terna’s efforts to modernize Italy’s national transmission grid, contributing to objectives set by the European Green Deal and the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan. By strengthening the grid, the agreement facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources, supporting Italy’s transition to a more sustainable energy system.
Fabio Zucca, Italy country manager for Prysmian, commented: “Our long-standing positive relationship with Terna comes from a spirit of shared goals, collaboration and commitment to make a real difference for the millions of end users across Italy. This framework agreement is an important commitment, from both Prysmian and Terna, at a critical moment in the energy transition, and we are proud to have been entrusted with this significant award.” The partnership reflects a shared dedication to improving energy infrastructure for millions of consumers.
In December 2024, Prysmian also secured a framework agreement with France’s transmission system operator, Réseau de Transport d’Électricité, to provide submarine power cables for integrating the Fos and Narbonnaise offshore wind farms into France’s grid, further demonstrating its expertise in supporting renewable energy infrastructure.
