The vessels will be built to the Bluetech 45 design, measuring 190 meters in length and prioritizing fuel efficiency and operational versatility. Polsteam stated: “The new units not only offer greater tonnage—they are, above all, economical to operate, modern, and efficient, which will ensure competitiveness in the global bulk transport market.” These features aim to support cost-effective and sustainable operations in the competitive maritime sector.
As a state-owned operator, Polsteam maintains a diverse dry bulk fleet with a significant presence in the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway system, transporting steel, grain, and general bulk cargoes using specialized laker vessels. The newbuild order at Wuhu follows a previous 12-ship program for lake carriers placed with Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding in China between 2022 and 2023, of which seven vessels have been delivered.
The agreement with Wuhu Weihai Shipbuilding reflects Polsteam’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its fleet to meet global demand for efficient and sustainable bulk transport. By incorporating advanced design elements, the new vessels are expected to enhance the company’s operational capabilities and market position.
This expansion underscores Polsteam’s strategic focus on maintaining a modern, efficient fleet to serve key trade routes, particularly in the Great Lakes region, while aligning with industry trends toward sustainability and operational excellence.
