The project is scheduled to start later this year and is expected to be completed by 2029. It includes the development of three new substations and upgrades to several existing ones, primarily utilizing current infrastructure corridors to reduce environmental impact.
Shawn Schukar, chairman and president of Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois, stated: "At a time when the Midwest faces a persistent shortage of the electricity needed to meet rising demand, this vital project will provide energy access and certainty for businesses and residential growth."
The Illinois Commerce Commission granted the necessary approval through a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, enabling the project to move forward. This development aligns with broader efforts across the United States to strengthen grid capacity in response to increasing electricity demand and the transition to sustainable energy sources.
Ameren Illinois provides electricity to 1.2 million customers and natural gas to over 800,000 customers across 1,200 communities in the state. The power line project is expected to enhance service reliability and support economic and residential expansion in the region.
