
The move aims to more than triple the site’s on-dock rail capacity.
The Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility will be significantly expanded, increasing from 82 acres to 171 acres. This development aims to modernize the existing rail yard and enable more efficient cargo transport. Once completed, the expanded facility is expected to support the movement of up to 4.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually, more than tripling the current on-dock rail capacity.
Jacobs stated that the project will contribute to reducing truck traffic around the port, which is anticipated to lower emissions and improve air quality for surrounding communities. Additionally, the project will generate more than 1,000 local jobs and support health and environmental goals.
Eva Wood, executive vice-president at Jacobs, said: “Jacobs’ experience in managing large-scale infrastructure projects will deliver enhancements at the port that will expedite cargo movement, reduce shipping costs and contribute to a more resilient supply chain.”
Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero emphasized the project's alignment with the port’s mission: “The Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility embodies the core values of the Port of Long Beach, allowing more cargo to move through our marine terminals with greater efficiency and less impacts on the community. Jacobs has demonstrated its qualifications to help us accommodate this peak workflow, and we’re pleased to work with the company to build this new gateway for the nation’s container cargo.”
The Pier B facility is scheduled for completion in 2032. Upon its completion, it is expected to significantly support the port’s long-term environmental sustainability efforts and provide meaningful benefits to nearby neighborhoods through improved logistics and reduced roadway congestion.
The project represents Jacobs’ continued engagement in major infrastructure developments. In June 2025, the company also secured a contract to provide design, engineering, and environmental services for Boeing’s expansion at its St. Louis campus in Missouri, further reinforcing Jacobs’ position as a key player in delivering complex infrastructure solutions across the United States.
