
Aurora Botnia, equipped to run on batteries, LNG, and bio-LNG, will see its battery capacity increase to 12.6 MWh following an upgrade scheduled for January 2026, in collaboration with AYK Energy, Foreship, and Wärtsilä. This enhancement, building on an earlier 10.4 MWh capacity, will make it the RoPax ferry with the largest battery capacity.
The partnerships are set to establish the Vaasa–Umeå route as the first international green shipping corridor, supported by the DNV-led Nordic Roadmap. Wasaline achieved its carbon-neutral goal, originally set for 2030, ahead of schedule. Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director of Wasaline, stated: “We have constantly worked with the possibilities to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint, and we have seen the coming rules as an opportunity for our traffic between Finland and Sweden. With this unique collaboration with Stena Line and Gasum, Wasaline can achieve carbon neutrality already now as a forerunner for the industry. This also means that all cargo and passengers travelling with Wasaline are sustainable with no additional extra charges for being carbon neutral.”
In 2024, Wasaline and Gasum collaborated to create the first large-scale FuelEU Maritime pooling service, launched in January 2025, allowing conventional fuel vessels to reduce compliance costs under new regulations. This initiative supports sustainable shipping practices while maintaining cost efficiency.
The agreements reflect Wasaline’s commitment to environmental sustainability, leveraging biofuels and advanced technology to minimize emissions. The Vaasa–Umeå route’s transformation into a green corridor sets a benchmark for the shipping industry, promoting eco-friendly transport solutions and supporting the broader adoption of clean energy in maritime operations.
