The operations involved supplying biofuel to vessels owned by Brazil’s CITROSUCO and Türkiye’s D?TA?, a subsidiary of KOÇ Holding. The first operation, conducted on July 26, 2025, delivered 500 tons of Bio24F to CITROSUCO’s Liberia-flagged fruit juice tanker, Carlos Fischer, using the Ulucak barge. The second operation, on August 7, 2025, provided 185 tons of Bio24F to D?TA?’s scrubber-equipped vessel, T.Adalyn, via the Alsancak 2 barge.
Headquartered in Izmir, Arkas Bunker is the first company in Türkiye to achieve International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) for marine fuels. The company initiated biofuel use in Türkiye’s maritime sector in October 2024, supplying Bio24F to the Arkas Line-owned container vessel Matilde A. Can Atalay, CEO of Arkas Line, stated at the time: “Following conducted experiments, the company was ‘ready’ to provide biofuel bunkering services while making sure carbon emissions were reduced ‘without any change in the ship’s fuel system.’”
The Turkish biofuel market has seen significant growth, with the solid biofuel sector increasing by 30% in 2024 to reach $51 million. Globally, the biofuel market is projected to grow substantially, with an estimated value of $225.9 billion by 2028, according to industry sources. This reflects increasing demand for renewable energy solutions in the maritime industry and beyond.
Despite this progress, challenges remain. A recent report from Norway’s Rystad Energy noted that biofuel blends, including bio-LNG, face limitations in production and availability. The report emphasized that further investment and technological advancements are crucial to scaling up these sustainable fuels to support global net-zero goals.
Arkas Bunker’s efforts in Istanbul highlight its leadership in promoting environmentally friendly fuel alternatives. By integrating Bio24F into its operations, the company is contributing to reduced carbon emissions in the maritime sector while meeting international sustainability standards. These bunkering operations underscore Türkiye’s growing role in the global transition to cleaner energy sources, with Arkas Bunker at the forefront of this transformation.
