
The project is a joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission. UK-based infrastructure company Balfour Beatty is overseeing the installation of HVDC land cables in both Scotland and England. On August 18, Balfour Beatty confirmed that work on the EGL2 cable route had officially started.
Estimated at €5 billion, the project is partly funded by an €800 million loan from the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK), a state-owned entity supporting Swedish exporters, subcontractors, and international clients. The initiative is expected to be completed in 2029, enabling the transmission of renewable electricity sufficient to power approximately two million homes.
“This project represents a significant step forward in enhancing the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure,” a spokesperson from SSEN Transmission stated. “By connecting key regions, EGL2 will play a vital role in delivering clean energy to millions of households.”
