KoBold Metals, backed by prominent investors including Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, has obtained seven exploration permits in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), enabling a large-scale mineral exploration program focused on lithium and other resources. The permits were granted as part of an agreement signed in July, which also provides KoBold with an opportunity to acquire the Manono deposit, a significant lithium resource.

The exploration licences include four permits in the lithium-rich Manono territory.

The exploration licenses span areas in Tanganyika and Haut-Lomami provinces. Four permits cover the lithium-rich Manono territory in Tanganyika, while three are located in Malemba Nkulu territory in Haut-Lomami. A company official stated: “Our exploration efforts across all seven new licences will be focused on lithium.” These permits also allow exploration for other minerals, such as coltan and rare earths, across approximately 1,600 square kilometers.

The Manono deposit, recognized as one of the world’s largest untapped lithium reserves, is currently subject to a legal dispute between the Congolese government and Australian company AVZ Minerals regarding mining permit issuance. This matter is under review, and KoBold’s plans may depend on its resolution. The company aims to leverage advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, to enhance exploration efficiency in these regions.

In a separate development, KoBold Metals has expanded its global exploration efforts through a partnership with Aurion Resources in Finland. KoBold Exploration Finland, a subsidiary, has secured the right to earn a 75% interest in non-gold and silver commodities at Aurion’s Risti property. Under this agreement, KoBold will invest €11.07 million ($12 million) in exploration activities over five years. This initiative complements KoBold’s strategy to diversify its portfolio in critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies.

These projects reflect KoBold’s commitment to advancing sustainable resource development. The DRC exploration focuses on securing lithium supplies vital for battery production, while the Finland partnership strengthens KoBold’s presence in another key mineral-rich region. Both initiatives are expected to contribute to global efforts to meet growing demand for materials used in renewable energy systems.

KoBold’s use of innovative exploration methods, such as data-driven geological mapping, aims to optimize resource discovery while minimizing environmental impact.
