The expansion has been enabled by upgrades in technology, installation of additional masts, and increased network capacity. This development ensures that 5G now delivers stronger reach and performance, particularly in areas with challenging terrain, in rural locations, and indoors. With this activation, 5G coverage now matches that of 4G, meaning the entire Swedish network, from mountains to archipelagos, is included. The upgrade also strengthens redundancy, improving the reliability of the mobile network.
The activation was carried out on the 700 MHz low-frequency band, which provides wide coverage and is effective in forests, mountainous areas, and urban indoor environments. Combined with the 3500 MHz high-capacity band used in urban centers, Net4Mobility ensures both extensive coverage and high performance for customers.
This expansion is part of Tele2 and Telenor’s nationwide modernization program, which focuses on boosting both coverage and capacity along roads, railways, smaller towns, and major cities. At the same time, older 2G and 3G networks are being phased out by the end of the year, with 4G and 5G taking their place. For customers, the improvement is automatic, with the upgraded network now fully prepared for the development of next-generation 5G services.
Elin Ovéus, Head of Networks at Tele2, commented: “Going from 25 to 90 percent land coverage in one step is a huge change. It means that 5G is now available across our entire network in Sweden, from the mountains to archipelago, providing our customers with more reliable and accessible connectivity no matter where they are. At the same time, we are laying the foundation for new services and solutions that can be developed on a robust and future-proof network.”
Sara Kebert, Network Expert at Telenor Sweden, also highlighted the milestone: “Our mission is to build the network of the future that works where life happens, no matter where you live. Being able to offer 5G in places that have previously been hard to reach – in forests, mountains, basements, and rural areas – is an important step in creating a network for the future. We can now provide 5G coverage that reaches the most people and covers the largest area, for people all across the country.”
With this achievement, Sweden now benefits from one of the most comprehensive 5G networks in Europe, strengthening digital connectivity and creating opportunities for innovation and future service development.
