The new substation will support a public school set to open in September 2027.
The project will cover both preconstruction and construction services for a 27kV enclosed substation. According to the company, the new facility will provide essential infrastructure to support several planned developments on Governors Island. Among these is a new public school scheduled to open in September 2027. In addition, the substation will serve the New York Climate Exchange, a 37,000m² research and education consortium that will focus on climate-related challenges in New York and globally. Construction is expected to begin later in 2025, with completion targeted for 2027.
This announcement follows other recent projects secured by Skanska in the United States. In August 2025, the company signed a $69 million contract with Durham Tech Community College in Durham, North Carolina. The project will involve the construction of a three-storey health sciences facility covering about 7,400m². Work on this building is scheduled to begin this month, with completion expected by November 2027. The contract will also be reflected in Skanska’s US order bookings for the third quarter of 2025.
Skanska has also taken on a significant infrastructure project in New York. The company recently signed a contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to implement a main cable dehumidification project for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. This contract, valued at about Skr2.5 billion ($249 million), includes the design and installation of a dehumidification system for the bridge’s four main cables. The work also covers the integration of an acoustic monitoring system to enhance maintenance and long-term durability of the structure.
Through these contracts, Skanska continues to expand its role in large-scale projects across the US, ranging from educational facilities to transportation and urban infrastructure. The Governors Island project highlights the company’s involvement in supporting both community developments, such as schools, and research initiatives, such as the New York Climate Exchange. The combination of infrastructure upgrades and educational investments reflects Skanska’s broad project portfolio in the American market.
These projects also demonstrate Skanska’s ongoing engagement with local authorities and institutions, including municipal trusts, community colleges, and state transportation agencies. With several projects scheduled for completion between 2027 and beyond, the company is positioning itself to contribute to long-term infrastructure development in multiple US regions.
By securing contracts that combine technical innovation, educational support, and sustainability-focused initiatives, Skanska is building a strong presence in both public and institutional construction sectors. The Governors Island substation, in particular, is expected to play an important role in enabling new facilities and climate-related research initiatives within New York City.
