Borealis to Expand Polymer Compounding Capabilities? In Schwechat, Austria
Polymer compounding is a process that blends base resins, such as polypropylene, with additives, fiberglass, or recycled materials to create compounds tailored for specific applications. These specialty materials are designed to meet requirements for durability, lightweight performance, and heat resistance. The versatility of PP compounds allows them to serve multiple industries.
In consumer products and appliances, advanced PP materials are widely used to deliver durable, recyclable solutions that meet the functional needs of households. In mobility, lightweight PP compounds support the automotive industry, particularly in extending the range of electric vehicles and aligning with upcoming European Union regulations on recycled content. In infrastructure, they are applied in protective outer layers of steel pipes designed for transporting oil and gas under high-temperature conditions.
Stefan Doboczky, CEO of Borealis, highlighted the importance of this project: “This is our third significant investment this year, following the expansion of our energy business and the increase in capacity for our recyclable, lightweight polymer foam solutions. Over the past decade, Borealis has built strong expertise in circular solutions that meet our customers’ expectations for quality. With more capacity, we can deliver more of the materials they need, helping them hit performance targets and move closer to their sustainability goals. This project transforms innovation into tangible solutions – bringing our We4Customers strategy to life.”
The company emphasized that the new compounding line complements its broader sustainability and innovation strategy. By expanding production capacity, Borealis aims to better serve industries that are undergoing transformation, such as the automotive sector’s transition toward electrification and the energy sector’s shift toward lower-carbon operations. The investment also supports infrastructure development by providing materials that combine strength, efficiency, and reliability.
Borealis has made multiple strategic investments in 2025, reinforcing its focus on advancing circularity and delivering customer-driven solutions. The Schwechat expansion highlights the company’s long-term vision to scale up sustainable materials while ensuring high performance. By integrating innovation with operational growth, Borealis continues to position itself as a leader in polymer technology and sustainable manufacturing.
With this new project, the company strengthens its role in providing high-quality, specialized materials that contribute to environmental responsibility and industrial progress. The investment reflects Borealis’ commitment to aligning technological innovation with practical applications, ensuring that industries from consumer goods to mobility and infrastructure can benefit from advanced and sustainable polymer solutions.
