The AW1 facility, with a capacity of 120MW/240MWh, is designed to store electricity and release it during peak demand periods. By balancing supply and demand, it will support the UK’s transition to lower carbon emissions and enhance energy security. EDF will manage AW1 through its Powershift platform and trading team, ensuring electricity is delivered at critical times while maximising commercial returns.
For over fifty years, Uskmouth supplied electricity to the grid as a coal power plant. Now, under Ampeak Energy’s ownership, it is being converted into one of the UK’s largest battery storage sites. The partnership with EDF provides both technical expertise and market access, helping to position Uskmouth as a flagship for large-scale sustainable energy development.
Stuart Fenner, commercial director for wholesale market services at EDF, commented: “We’re proud to be working with Ampeak Energy on this landmark project. Battery storage is key to helping the UK reach its climate goal, and our partnership will unlock long-term value from one of the UK’s most exciting clean energy sites.”
David Taaffe, chief operating officer at Ampeak Energy, added: “AW1 is our flagship battery project, and our partnership with EDF gives us the confidence to deliver lasting value and build momentum towards the creation of one of the largest battery sites in the UK, which can be a catalyst for local and national regeneration.”
With the AW1 project having reached financial close, Ampeak Energy is now moving forward with its plans to establish Uskmouth as a major energy park. The site will not only provide reliable battery storage but also demonstrate how legacy fossil fuel infrastructure can be repurposed to support clean energy goals.
This agreement further strengthens EDF’s role as the UK’s largest operator of battery assets. The company continues to expand its renewable portfolio, with more than 1.5GW of renewable generation already in operation and over 14GW in construction, planning, and development. Its activities span onshore and offshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects, reinforcing its long-term commitment to energy transition.
The Uskmouth project represents an important step in reshaping the UK’s power sector. By turning a former coal-fired plant into a modern storage hub, Ampeak Energy and EDF are demonstrating the potential of innovative partnerships to advance clean energy solutions, deliver sustainable economic growth, and provide a model for future energy infrastructure redevelopment.
