The Malmbjerg project has the capacity to provide 25% of the total molybdenum demand within the EU.
Based on its NI 43-101 feasibility study, along with existing offtake and roasting agreements, the company expects to announce additional direct supply contracts with German steel producers. The supply chain will provide high-quality, low-emission molybdenum, with roasting operations carried out in Belgium.
Germany is currently the largest molybdenum consumer in the European Union, with 16.3 million pounds consumed in 2024, according to data from the International Molybdenum Association. Other European countries, including Italy and Finland, have already signed direct offtake agreements with Greenland Resources. These contracts support the company’s efforts to expand its role in the European market through the development of the Malmbjerg project in east-central Greenland.
The Malmbjerg project, an open-pit mine located about 30 kilometers from the coast, is expected to produce high-purity molybdenum along with magnesium as a by-product. The quality of molybdenum from this project, with its low levels of unwanted elements, makes it suitable for high-performance steel applications and defence-related industries. The project is designed to secure a stable long-term supply, a factor of growing importance to European industries.
Greenland Resources estimates that production from Malmbjerg could provide up to 25% of the EU’s overall molybdenum demand. Furthermore, output from the mine has the capacity to fully meet the molybdenum needs of the EU’s defence sector.
In June, the company received a 30-year exploitation licence for molybdenum and magnesium at Malmbjerg, with mining required to begin no later than December 2028. The licence also allows for the possibility of an extension of up to 50 years. Greenland Resources has stated its commitment to meeting additional conditions following the licence approval to ensure compliance and project advancement.
The collaboration with Hempel Metallurgical and the progress of the Malmbjerg project underline Greenland Resources’ strategy of expanding its role as a reliable supplier to the European steel industry. With increasing demand for low-emission and secure sources of raw materials, the initiative reflects a broader shift toward sustainable resource development while ensuring supply chain stability.
