The project draws on Mott MacDonald’s work in the ports, coastal, and offshore sectors.
UK-based engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has been engaged in the design of approximately 2,840 linear feet of the new bulkhead. The project is structured in phases and involves the design and replacement of multiple berths at the port.
Port Everglades is a major hub for Florida’s economy and transport network, supporting more than 200,000 jobs statewide. It is recognized as the world’s third-busiest cruise home port and also handles diverse cargoes, including petroleum and containerized goods. The bulkhead replacement is therefore seen as essential to maintaining the port’s role in regional and international trade.
The design incorporates resilience features to address future challenges. Berths will be raised by up to five feet to account for projected sea level rise. Provisions have also been made for hurricane-related conditions, including hydrostatic drawdown and wave overtopping. These enhancements ensure the facility can continue operating under changing environmental conditions while providing safe berthing for modern vessels.
The upgraded berths are designed to accommodate larger ships with deeper drafts and higher mooring requirements. Among them is the Star Princess cruise ship, which is scheduled to enter service in November 2025. The Entrance Channel bulkhead will safeguard access to the port’s main channel and align with broader plans for channel expansion in the future.
Importantly, the design allows construction work to proceed without disrupting ongoing terminal operations, ensuring the port continues its daily activities while improvements are carried out.
Mott MacDonald highlighted its contribution to the project, drawing on experience across the ports, coastal, and offshore sectors. The company stated it will continue to support the construction of Design Package 1 by providing engineering and inspection services. Meanwhile, predesign activities for Design Package 2 are already underway, setting the stage for subsequent phases of development.
The Port Everglades Bulkhead Replacement Project reflects the broader focus on strengthening port infrastructure to support economic activity, enhance resilience to climate-related challenges, and ensure readiness for future demands in both cruise and cargo operations. By modernizing critical facilities, the project supports the long-term efficiency and sustainability of one of Florida’s most important transport and trade hubs.
