The signing of the agreement for the Dukhan solar power plant.
The signing ceremony took place at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and president and CEO of QatarEnergy, signed the contract alongside Sechul Oh, president and CEO of Samsung C&T. Abdulla bin Ali Al-Theyab, president of KAHRAMAA, attended the event with senior executives from both companies. KAHRAMAA is the sole transmission and distribution system operator in Qatar’s electricity and water sector.
The first phase of the Dukhan plant is scheduled to deliver 1 gigawatt (GW) of power to the KAHRAMAA grid by the end of 2028. The facility will incorporate advanced features, including a solar tracker system and high-temperature inverters, to maximize efficiency and performance.
Al-Kaabi highlighted the significance of the project: “This agreement is an important milestone in our effort to manage the environment in a manner that balances economic and social development with environmental protection, as stipulated by Qatar National Vision 2030. It also supports one of the key goals of QatarEnergy’s Sustainability Strategy, which is to generate more than 4,000MW of renewable energy by 2030.”
He added: “When completed, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, and Ras Laffan solar power plants will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually, while contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand. We are pleased to collaborate with Samsung C&T to help achieve this vision.”
The new solar project reinforces Qatar’s strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. By integrating advanced solar technologies, the Dukhan plant is expected to play a central role in diversifying Qatar’s energy mix and lowering emissions in line with national and corporate sustainability targets.
For Samsung C&T, the partnership represents a significant contribution to the region’s energy transformation. The company’s expertise in large-scale construction and energy infrastructure is expected to support timely delivery of the plant, which will become one of the largest solar power facilities in the country.
With demand for electricity in Qatar continuing to grow, the Dukhan project provides an important step toward ensuring reliable supply while meeting environmental goals. Together with existing solar facilities, the project will form a core part of Qatar’s long-term energy strategy, aligning with global trends toward renewable energy adoption.
