
From January to August 2025, China’s cumulative power battery installations reached 417.9 GWh, up 43.1% year-on-year. Ternary batteries contributed 77.4 GWh, or 18.5% of the total, down 9.7% from last year. Meanwhile, LFP installations surged to 340.5 GWh, representing 81.5% of the total and an impressive 65.1% increase from the same period in 2024.
In August, 33 power battery companies installed batteries in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, a slight decrease of two compared to the previous year. The leading companies delivered 39.5 GWh (63.1% of total installations), 50.9 GWh (81.5%), and 59.4 GWh (95.0%) for the top two, top five, and top ten suppliers, respectively. The combined share of the top ten suppliers fell by 1.1 percentage points from last year.
Over the first eight months of 2025, the number of power battery makers installing batteries into NEVs increased to 51, three more than last year. The top two, top five, and top ten suppliers accounted for 273.4 GWh, 341.9 GWh, and 394.3 GWh of total installations, representing 65.4%, 81.8%, and 94.4% of the market, respectively. The share of the top ten suppliers dropped by 1.6 percentage points compared to 2024.
China's battery production in August 2025 reached 139.6 GWh, up 4.4% from July and 37.3% year-on-year. In the first eight months, total battery production reached 970.7 GWh, up 54.3% from 2024. Battery sales in August totaled 134.5 GWh, a 5.7% increase from July and a 45.6% rise year-on-year. Power batteries accounted for 73.5% of the total sales, reaching 98.9 GWh, while sales of other batteries stood at 35.6 GWh, or 26.5% of total sales.
From January to August 2025, total battery sales hit 920.7 GWh, a 58.2% year-on-year increase. Power batteries accounted for 73.4% of total sales, or 675.5 GWh, and other batteries made up 26.6% (245.2 GWh), nearly doubling with an 87.6% year-on-year increase.
In August, China exported 22.6 GWh of batteries, a 2.6% decrease from July but a 23.9% increase from the previous year. Power battery exports reached 15.1 GWh, or 66.6% of total exports, marking a 1.9% month-on-month increase and a 35.7% year-on-year rise. Exports of other batteries stood at 7.6 GWh, accounting for 33.4% of total exports, down 10.4% from July but up 5.6% from last year.
In the first eight months of 2025, total battery exports reached 173.1 GWh, up 48.5% year-on-year, representing 18.8% of total sales. Power battery exports accounted for 111.5 GWh (64.4%), while other battery exports reached 61.6 GWh (35.6%), nearly doubling with a 99% year-on-year increase.
