According to the company, Yuanchun 001 features an independently developed methanol-hydrogen electric drive system that enables net-zero carbon emissions over its lifecycle, supported by the use of green methanol. The vessel is equipped with two 280kW methanol generators, two 258kWh lithium batteries, and electric motors. Together, these systems allow the ship to operate under several modes: hybrid, generator only, pure electric, or shore charging.
Geely stated that the technology is expected to lower energy consumption by around 42% compared with similar diesel-powered vessels. The company emphasized that the flexible configuration supports environmentally friendly operations and demonstrates the potential for green fuels in inland waterway transport.
Geely officials noted that the development of Yuanchun 001 is an important part of its transition to sustainable operations. The project highlights the company’s focus on innovation in alternative fuels and marine energy solutions, which are increasingly seen as essential for reducing emissions in the shipping sector.
In addition to the methanol/hydrogen hybrid riverboat, Geely has advanced other clean-fuel projects. Through its subsidiary Jisu Logistics, the group recently launched an LNG-powered roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel. Named Geely JISU Fortune, the 7,000 CEU ship was delivered at the end of May. Shortly after launch, it began its maiden voyage to key European markets.
The introduction of Geely JISU Fortune was described as a major step in the company’s international growth strategy, showcasing its capability to expand operations beyond domestic markets while incorporating lower-emission shipping technologies. Together with the launch of Yuanchun 001, these projects underline Geely’s approach to integrating green technologies across both land and marine transport sectors.
The development of these vessels is in line with the wider industry trend of adopting clean fuels such as methanol, hydrogen, and LNG. These alternatives are increasingly viewed as viable pathways for reducing emissions, improving efficiency, and supporting global sustainability goals.
By investing in innovative marine technologies, Geely Holding has positioned itself as a player in advancing low-emission shipping solutions. The dual focus on domestic applications, such as inland river transport, and international shipping demonstrates the company’s intent to build a more diverse and sustainable fleet.
