Turbine installation is scheduled to begin in 2026 from the Port of Esbjerg.
Each monopile, measuring approximately 100 meters in length and weighing up to 1,500 tonnes, was transported from the heavy-lift terminal in Eemshaven, Netherlands. The installation was carried out by Jan De Nul using the vessel Les Alizés. Unlike conventional designs, the project utilized extended single monopiles without separate transition pieces. Secondary steel structures, such as boat landings, are scheduled for assembly later this year, with logistics managed from the Port of Thyborøn, where the control center for offshore operations is based.
To protect the monopiles until turbine tower installation begins in 2026, reusable hard covers are being fitted. These covers, unlike traditional single-use options, promote sustainability by enhancing circularity and minimizing waste, aligning with RWE’s commitment to environmentally responsible construction.
Turbine installation will commence in 2026 from the Port of Esbjerg, Denmark. The Thor wind farm will be the first globally to feature 36 turbine towers made with reduced carbon emissions, with half of the turbines incorporating recyclable rotor blades. Once operational in 2027, the wind farm, with a final capacity of 1,080MW, will generate renewable electricity sufficient for over one million Danish households.
A new service facility at the Port of Thorsminde is under construction and expected to be completed by late 2025. This facility will serve as the base for operations and maintenance, creating 50 to 60 local jobs. The Thor project is a joint venture, with RWE holding a 51% stake and Norges Bank Investment Management holding 49%. RWE will oversee construction and long-term operations throughout the project’s lifecycle.
RWE offshore wind chief technology officer Tobias Keitel stated: “Together with our partner, Norges Bank Investment Management, we are well on track with the construction of Thor – Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. The safe installation of the monopiles is testament to the expertise, dedication and collaboration of the entire team involved.”
