The new Aurach Bridge is 50m-high and 420m-long, with piers foundations resting on bored piles more than 30m-deep
Three WOLFF 7534.16 Clear cranes, each with a maximum load capacity of 16.5 tonnes, were deployed for the project. Supplied by Habau, a long-term Wolffkran client, the cranes were installed in 2022 on two 77.6-meter towers and one 64.1-meter tower. These cranes facilitated the demolition of the existing bridge and supported the transport of reinforcing steel, formwork elements, precast concrete components, construction vehicles, and concreting for the new bridge’s superstructures and piers. They handled freestanding loads of up to 13 tonnes and were dismantled in March 2025.
The project required meticulous planning due to constrained space between highway traffic, railway tracks, and a nearby stream. Strict safety and water protection regulations were followed, with the cranes equipped with slew limiters and cameras to enhance load handling precision and safety.
To maintain traffic flow during construction, a temporary side-position bridge with a new deck on provisional supports was built alongside the old structure. After demolishing the original bridge, the foundation for the new bridge was constructed adjacent to the temporary deck. In spring 2025, the side-position deck was hydraulically shifted onto the newly built piers using sliding tracks, completing the transition to the permanent structure.
“This project demonstrates the importance of precise logistics and advanced engineering to deliver infrastructure improvements while prioritizing safety and environmental considerations,” a representative from the Habau/Porr joint venture noted.
The new Aurach Bridge enhances connectivity along the A1 West Motorway, a vital route in Upper Austria. The project’s completion reflects a commitment to upgrading regional infrastructure while minimizing disruptions to daily commuters and adhering to environmental standards.
The successful execution of the project underscores the effectiveness of collaboration between experienced contractors and specialized equipment providers. By leveraging advanced crane technology and innovative construction techniques, the Habau/Porr joint venture ensured the timely delivery of a modern, durable bridge.
This achievement strengthens Upper Austria’s transportation network, supporting economic activity and improving travel efficiency for local communities. The Aurach Bridge stands as a testament to the region’s focus on sustainable infrastructure development and precise project execution.
