Shell’s Avelia platform, launched in 2022 in collaboration with Amex Global Business Travel and Accenture, operates on a “book and claim” system that connects airlines, fuel suppliers, and corporate buyers. Through this digital framework, users can purchase SAF certificates to support the decarbonization of air travel, even when the fuel is not physically supplied at their departure airport. As of mid-2025, Avelia had facilitated the use of more than 41 million gallons of SAF across 17 airports worldwide.
Moeve produces sustainable aviation fuel at its La Rábida Energy Park in Spain using waste-based feedstocks such as used cooking oil. The company has set a target to increase its production capacity to 800,000 metric tons annually by 2030. By joining Avelia, Moeve aims to strengthen the availability and traceability of SAF, helping accelerate its integration into the global aviation fuel mix. Shell noted that the addition of Moeve marks a milestone in broadening supplier participation on its platform, which seeks to enhance transparency and scale the impact of SAF purchases.
Despite the growing number of partnerships and digital tools such as Avelia, the sustainable aviation fuel market continues to face challenges in expanding production to meet global demand. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), total SAF output in 2025 is expected to double from the previous year, reaching about 2 million tons. However, this volume would still account for only around 0.7% of the total fuel consumption by airlines.
Industry analysts have pointed out that while corporate demand for SAF credits and airlines’ commitments to emission reduction are rising, high production costs and limited feedstock availability remain significant constraints. Platforms like Avelia are seen as practical mechanisms to close this gap by linking verified producers such as Moeve with corporate buyers seeking to meet sustainability goals.
The collaboration between Shell and Moeve demonstrates a shared effort to accelerate aviation’s transition toward lower-carbon fuels. Both companies emphasized that digital traceability and verifiable data exchange are key to ensuring transparency in the supply chain and building trust among stakeholders. The deal also highlights a broader trend of energy firms and technology partners leveraging blockchain to improve accountability and scalability in sustainable fuel markets.
Through its participation in Shell’s Avelia platform, Moeve contributes to the expansion of the SAF ecosystem, supporting the industry’s gradual shift toward cleaner energy sources while maintaining operational flexibility and ensuring reliable certification of fuel sustainability.
