Masdar currently has secured a total capacity of 43.2GW.
The independent power producer initiatives include the 1,400MW Najran solar plant and the 600MW Ad Darb facility. Both projects will follow a build, own, and operate model. A 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed with SPPC for the sale of electricity generated from these facilities.
The Ad Darb solar plant, located in Jizan Province, is scheduled to begin commercial operations by late 2027. The Najran project, situated in Najran Province, is expected to start operations in the first half of 2028. These two projects are expected to contribute significantly to Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy capacity under its Vision 2030 framework.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said: “Masdar is proud to support Saudi Arabia to achieve its Vision 2030 renewable energy targets. Winning the Najran and Ad Darb projects marks a significant expansion of our Saudi portfolio and is testament to our two decades of experience in developing and operating utility-scale renewable projects, and our strong track record in the region. We look forward to develop these projects and contribute to the kingdom’s sustainable economic growth.”
SPPC serves as the principal buyer responsible for conducting predevelopment studies, tendering power generation projects, and signing long-term PPAs with developers.
Currently, Masdar’s total secured capacity stands at 43.2GW, with 12.3GW already connected to the power grid. Over the past three years, Masdar has maintained its position as the company with the largest awarded capacity in SPPC’s competitive bidding rounds, reinforcing its leading role in the renewable energy sector of the region.
Separately, SPPC has granted a license to a consortium formed by TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Energy and Water Company for the development, construction, and operation of a 400MW solar PV project in As Sufun, Saudi Arabia. The electricity from this solar facility will be sold to SPPC under a 25-year PPA.
The As Sufun project is expected to connect to the grid by 2027 and aims to provide power to more than 68,400 households.
Aljomaih Energy and Water Company acting CEO Adnan Buhuligah said: “The 400MW As Sufun Solar PV Project in Hail region demonstrates our ongoing efforts to expand our renewable energy investments in the Kingdom. The project will supply clean energy to more than 68,400 households, underscoring our role in supporting Saudi’s Vision 2030 objectives toward a thriving and sustainable economy.”
The two newly awarded projects, together with the As Sufun development, further strengthen Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy infrastructure and highlight growing collaboration among regional and international energy developers.
